Great things were predicted for Anthony Edwards after he scored as "Goose" in Top Gun. That he has achieved them on TV in ER and not on the big screen could be owing to a string of mediocre films, though this buddy cop movie is far from his worst. Comedy specialist Richard Benjamin, who gave us Mermaids and Made in America, is perhaps not the best director for a tough crime picture and there's nothing new or profound about his slant on white liberalism versus black realism. Yet Edwards and co-star Forest Whitaker are at least committed to giving their clichéd characters some depth.
