Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Odd couple comedy caper starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin. Critically maligned upon it's release, but entertaining enough and occasionally genuinely funny
This much under-rated Martin comedy not only provides the funnyman with one of his better roles of recent years, but also allows Caine to play a great straight man foil to the white-haired joker's frantic mugging. Caine is a skilled con-artist, whose cosy life fleecing rich women on the French Riviera is interrupted by the arrival of Martin's greasy opportunistic amateur; having decided there is room for only one con-artist in town, the pair set themselves a wager, with an innocent beauty queen (Glenne Headly) as the target. The surprise ending can be spotted a mile off, but it's still enormous fun getting there. |
