Devil in a Blue Dress
After his brilliant thriller One False Move, director Carl Franklin makes all the right moves with this film noir. It's a supremely stylish thriller that has Denzel Washington as a man with time on his hands who's hired to find a politician's girlfriend (Jennifer Beals), and in the process is framed for murder. From the thriller by Walter Mosley that introduced the character of black private eye Easy Rawlins, the film has a timberyard full of sawn-off dialogue and enough high-voltage tension to work an electric chair.
