Kent, the unscrupulous boss of Bottleneck has Sheriff Keogh killed when he asks one too many questions about a rigged poker game that gives Kent a stranglehold over the local cattle rangers. The mayor, who is in cahoots with Kent appoints the town drunk, Washington Dimsdale, as the new sheriff assuming that he'll be easy to control. But what the mayor doesn't know is that Dimsdale was a deputy under famous lawman, Tom Destry, and is able to call upon the equally formidable Tom Destry Jr to be his deputy. Featuring a career reviving performance from Marlene Dietrich as bar singer Frenchie, whi... ch could well have been the inspiration for Madeline Kahn's "Blazing Saddles" character, Lili Von Schtupp.

Destry Rides Again
Remembered today for its rollicking good humour and the fabulous Marlene Dietrich performing See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have, this is one of those comedy westerns that has a universal appeal. Here's lanky and lovable James Stewart as Tom Destry, who manages to clean up the lawless town of Bottle Neck by using a slow drawl rather than a quick draw. Chief villain is scowling, snide Brian Donlevy, and there's marvellous character support from Mischa Auer, Charles Winninger and Allen Jenkins. Dietrich, cast against type, and Stewart, in his first western lead, strike sparks off one another (and in real life, too!), and the cat-fight between Dietrich and Una Merk...
In arguably the best of comedy westerns, Stewart, slow on the drawl, is at his humorous peak, superbly underplaying opposite the overplaying, but equally effective, Dietrich.
Dietrich, happy to have freer rein than in the Josef von Sternberg movies, lets her hair down as saloon gal Frenchie, singing 'See What the Boys in the Backroom Will Have'. The witty and exciting screenplay had Stewart cleaning up the lawless town of Bottleneck, without resorting to the gun.
A film that has stood the test of time, you only need to look at George Marshall's shot-by-shot Technicolor remake to appreciate the quality of the original.
