Deranged
Pasolini's exuberant, fleshy adaptation of ten of the titillating tales of the Arabian Nights. Mildly erotic, slightly deranged, and beautifully entertaining, this is one of the Italian director's finest works
Ten interspliced tales of love and love-making, potions and betrayal, are linked by the story of a man searching for his kidnapped slave girl. The final and best segment of Pasolini's trilogy of great story cycles - the others being The Decameron (1971) and The Canterbury Tales (1972) - he concentrates on the more scatological episodes, retaining the bawdy and free spirit of the original tales, unconstrained by Freudian or religious guilt. This version of the Arabic classic, which took almost two years to complete, was shot in Yemen, Eritrea, Iran and Nepal, capturing the beauty of those countries and bringing out all the vitality of the stories. |
