Death on the Nile
Heiress Lynnet Ridgeway (Lois Chiles) is shot aboard the Karnak steamer, whilst honneymooning down the Nile with her new husband Simon Doyle (Simon MacCorkindale). Simon's recently-jilted fiancee (Mia Farrow) is the chief suspect & Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) & old time friend Colonel Race (David Niven) have the job of working out who the killer (or killers) are.
A sumptuous, beautifully shot movie is filled with a glittering array of 70's & classic era stars. Added to the above are Jon Finch, Jack Warden, George Kennedy, Jane Birkin, Olivia Hussey & Angela Lansbury. But best of all are Bette Davis & Maggie Smith, who spit venom at each other in a couple of memorable scenes. I loved this movie. The cast ham it up just enough & a little campery is always required of in any classic Christie novel. The pacing is just right & we are given alot of background before the first killing. Add to this, the fact that the movie was shot entirely on location & this makes for a brilliant whodunnit. Second only to Murder on the Orient Express. A 25 minute 'making of' feature (that was made at the time of the movie, with Ustinov & Birkin interviewed) make this a dvd worth watching. |
