Death Becomes HerThe special effects are the real stars of this pitch-black supernatural comedy in which Streep plays a neurotic, self-obsessed screen celeb who is (literally) haunted by a vengeful rival (Hawn). Despite the state-of-the-art visual tricks, which allow the characters to batter each other as freely as if they were in a cartoon and a script barbed with bitchy one-liners, it boils down to an indigestible mix of incompatible ingredients which never quite gels. Zemeckis (who had previously helmed the frantically funny Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) seems unsure which genre he is sending up, but the leads sink their teeth into it with obvious enthusiasm.
