Society is one of those classic teen movies which where so sucessful in the 1980s -- except this one doesn't have Molly Ringwald ending up with the hottest boy in school. A pre-Baywatch Billy Warlock plays the outsider kid who finds out that his family and the rest of the residents in his small Californian town aren't what they seem. The whole of the movie is a build up to the surreal pay-off in the last 20 minutes, which seems to divide opinion here -- yeah, it's about as subtle a social commentary as Balamory, but it's still a classic climax. Peter Weir was on pretty shaky ground when he made Dead Poets Society. Coming on the back of his unsuccessful adaptation of Paul Theroux's The Mosquito Coast, the success or otherwise of Weir's school drama spelt the difference between continued employment in America for the director or a spot on the next boat back to Australia.
