Dead Men Don't Wear PlaidTo accuse Reiner's film of being a one-joke movie is to suggest that it should be dismissed, but when the joke is this good and delivered with consistent skill and invention, then he manages to turn it into a compliment. Martin is private dick Rigby Reardon, employed by Juliet Forrest (Ward) to investigate the mysterious death of her father, a prominent cheese magnate who had been working on a new recipe. The twist is as he trawls through the hard-boiled film noir cliche Martin takes us on a journey through cinema history. He meets up with the likes of Bogart, Crawford, Cagney et al. in skilfully constructed scenes, where he interacts with footage from their old films. It works so well because you cannot see the join and it helps that the script is sharp, knowing and funny. More than a treat for movie buffs. |
