When pirate Captain Harry Black gets fatally wounded in battle, he passes on his ship, a crew of bandits and one third of a treasure map to his daughter, Morgan. But before she can hunt for the treasure, she must find the missing sections of the map. With the help of a small loyal band of her crew and petty thief William Shaw, Morgan sets out to command the ship against mutiny, retrieve the missing maps and fight off her villainous Uncle Dawg Brown and his band of henchmen to find the hidden treasure of Cutthroat Island.
Worst Film Ever Made
Closely followed by Harlin's other debacle, Deep Blue Sea, this is possibly the worst film ever made. Geena Davis's timbers are not so much shivered as deep-frozen, so stiff and wooden is her acting in this. She was married to Harlin at the time - this film probably prompted the divorce.
Two hours of my life I'll never get back.
Cutthroat Island Notorious high seas adventure starring Geena Davis as a pirate captain and Matthew Modine as her scholarly slave. From director Renny Harlin
Renny Harlin is not a director known for subtlety. In many ways CutThroat Island deserves its reputation as one of modern cinema's biggest turkeys - the director spent so much time and effort blowing things up that story and character were largely sacrificed. But that's not his biggest crime: that lies with the casting of mumsy Geena Davis in a sort of female Errol Flynn role.
It just doesn't work, by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it's all rather kinky - Harlin and Davis were married at the time, so you...

It just doesn't work, by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it's all rather kinky - Harlin and Davis were married at the time, so you have to wonder if this entire movie was some sort of large-scale, public realisation of a dubious bedroom fantasy. "Dress up in breeches, Geena love,...
Cutthroat Island
This pirate picture from Renny Harlin has all the ingredients to shiver the timbers and also boasts the best treasure map ever seen on screen, yet it has gone down in history as one of the biggest box-office disasters of recent times. Geena Davis and Matthew Modine swagger with suitable bravado, but their performances are sunk by the predictability of the action. The storm, the sea battle, the sword fights and the romance all work like clockwork, so there's little suspense to transform familiar spectacle into edge-of-the-seat excitement. It's polished entertainment, but with a little more imagination it could have been exhilarating.

Now I know its been slammed by the critics, but honestly I really enjoyed this as a kid. Ok so theres been more successfull Pirate movies later like Pirates Of The Carribbean 1 & 2 (number 3 wasnt that great a film in my opinion), but its not exactly Superman: The Quest For Peace or Jaws: The Revenge either (two of the most god awfull films ever made). Its ejoyable family fun.
Hey, I saw this on TV years ago but just re-watched it and have to say I agree with SkienceFriction's comments.. it's a helluva good movie. OK it's not high art or anything, but if you like your swash-well-buckled you could do a lot worse than this. Geena Davis makes an excellent lead here, a gutsy performance and I liked the fact that the pirates have dirty faces..you can practically smell the bilgewater! Mathew Modine wouldn't be a fave of mine but he's OK as the love interest and Frank Langella's a great villain as always. The fact this film was savaged by the critics is a mystery to me, it's not that bad. The story's not amazing but for a pirate yarn it's alright. The only thing I'd really say as a negative is that the music is too loud and omnipresent, enough to make me feel seasick almost! Will these composers never learn.. Still, a fine ripping-yarn and good movie for a Sunday afternoon, I'd give it 4.5/5 and I'll watch it again sometime for sure. Yo-Ho-Ho me Hearties..Geena Rocks!!
