Cool RunningsIt's important to know that this film's story is based on fact: beyond any likely expectations, a group of Jamaicans entered the 1988 Winter Olympics held in Canada. Their chosen sport was bobsledding, and practice, which made far from perfect, was on sleds with wheels. Once in wintry Calgary they could test their prowess on ice. From this curious endeavour, a spirited - if sentimental and conventional - movie has been constructed. Should you care about such competitions and their attendant commercialism and jingoism, the film may appeal. Sadly, we gain no understanding of whether the quartet's anarchic notion produced anything other than a warm glow in the icy sunshine.
