Directed by Anthony Minghella (THE ENGLISH PATIENT), this Civil War saga addresses romance, friendship, and the ravages of war--both in the field and on the home front. Far more than a simple love story, Minghella's film captures the horrors of war for both those fighting it, and for those left behind. Based on the Charles Frazier novel, this is a tale of hope, longing, redemption, second chances, and faith. Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman) is a proper lady who accompanies her preacher father (Donald Sutherland) to Cold Mountain, North Carolina. She waits for her love, W.P. Inman (Jude Law)--a se... nsitive man of few words--to return from war. In the process she learns basic survival skills and finds strength from no-nonsense Ruby (Renee Zellweger), a spitfire who can work the land as well as any man. Meanwhile, wounded Inman has had enough of war and killing, and is slowly working his way back to Ada despite the perils of being a Confederate deserter. Law and Kidman are genuinely touching as two virtual strangers who invest all of their faith in each other, and Zellweger is astounding as the uncultured but compassionate Ruby. Rounding out the cast is an impressive array of actors, including Brendan Gleeson, Ray Winstone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jack White (of the White Stripes), Kathy Baker, Giovanni Ribisi, and many others.

Cameo central
'Cold Mountain' is a wonder to behold. Seriously. Remember that it comes directed by Anthony Minghella, the guy who brought us yawnfest 'The English Patient'. I know that it won awards, but it was still three hours of dust.
'Cold Mountain', on the other hand, is three hours of spotting brilliant cameos from Philip Seymour Hoffman to Giovanni Ribisi, from Natalie Portman to the much discussed Jack White (which is how he and Zellwegger got together). It's beautifully made and easily digestible, despite the emotionally difficult material. The opening scene deals with a massacre within the American Civil War. You don't know any of these characters and yet M...
Tremendous film
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this film, but the acting was mesmerising. Kidman, I thought, had the edge, although Zellweiger had the best lines:-) Jude Law was also okay, much to my surprise, this role was within his limited range. A terrific ensemble film, with many good actors contributing. The slow pace irked at times and the story could have been a lot better (and shorter), but I still have to give it 5 stars.

"Cold Mountain" tells the story of a wounded Confederate soldier named Inman who struggles on a perilous journey to get back home to Cold Mountain, N.C. as well as to Ada, the woman he left behind before going off to fight in the Civil War. Along the way, he meets a long line of interesting and colorful characters, while back at home, Ada is learning the ropes of managing her deceased father's farm with Ruby, a scrappy drifter who assists and teaches Ada along the way.
Most comments are pre-awards, note Zellweger best supporting but Kidman no award. Ironic. This is because the excellent book does not mirror Kidman's character, she missed it, but Rene hit the nail. No verbatim could match the eloquent pros of the novel, which may account for my disappointment with Kidman's out of character performance. A remake is needed with adept cast, with much more emphasis on Inman's war to romance issues. Just a thought, Rene as lead. Thanks for listening and if u have not, read the book!
although there are some parts of the film which are quite slow, overall it is very good, with good action scene. also a bit of comedy and romance.. 4/5
Rene Z knocked it out of the park!! Great story plot and acting. Great cinematography. Very well done. Must see. I dont normally like romance stories but this one was awesome. A very good civil war tale. Must see
Though not painted on so broad a canvas, it is a worthy successor to "Gone With The Wind , with a wealth of motley, intriguing characters. Civil Wars tend to be the cruellest and most horrible of wars, especially when opportunists slaughter their own side for private gain. [SPOILER]
I don't usually like romance in a war movie. This is one of the rare exceptions. The remarkable cast were fantastic as were the script and directing. I found this mesmerizing and did not find the slower areas to be distracting. What can I say? This is a must-see for all! It is on my war movies playlist.
