Top cast,fine script,exellent plot and gripping throughout - so why did this one dissapear off the radar almost as soon as it was released? - a real shame because its very good indeed....

A film that ends with a resounding whimper, Pieter Jan Brugge's The Clearing expends a great deal of energy creating an atmosphere that leads nowhere. An expertly judged set-up will hook you into a very tense situation, making the final disappointment all the more infuriating. Written by newcomer Justin Haythe, it has the feel of a studio film from the 1970s - a character-driven thriller starring actors rather than stars - but it never finds fifth gear.
