Vianne Rocher and her young daughter are drifters who are met with skepticism and resistance when they move to a conservative town in rural France and open a chocolate shop during Lent. As Vianne begins to work her magic and help those around her, the townspeople are soon won-over by her exuberance and her delicious chocolates - except for the mayor, who is determined to shut her down. When a group of river drifters visit the town, Vianne teaches the townspeople something about acceptance, and finds love for herself along the way.
Chocolate, Johnney, Juliette and a little French village.
Chocolate, Johnney Depp (with irish accent), Juliette Binoche and a quaint little french village. Truely what i call a truely gorgous film. Not a dull moment to be seen in the plot. Simply a very lovable film and well worth everyones time. I fell in love with it and i'm sure you will to.
Chocolat Chocolate-box adaptation of international bestseller about the struggle between liberation and conservatism. With Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp
A Hollywood Swede directing an international cast in an adaptation of an Englishwoman's novel that's set in France. Is this a recipe for success?
The talent's certainly there: director Lasse Hallström's The Cider House Rules garnered numerous awards, and the line-up of French institution Binoche, British grande dame Dench, American actor-with-integrity Depp, upcoming talent Moss and various international character actors (Molina, Stormare, Mrs Hallstöm Olin) smells good.

Chocolat
Director Lasse Hallström followed up The Cider House Rules with this delightful romantic comedy drama, adapted from the novel by Joanne Harris. Set in the late 1950s, it stars Juliette Binoche as a rootless mother who appears overnight in a small French village and brazenly opens a chocolate shop — during Lent. Staunch Catholic mayor Alfred Molina disapproves of her lifestyle and fears the challenge to his authority, but Binoche's confections are soon raising spirits (and more), particularly among the local wives. The arrival of handsome river gypsy Johnny Depp further inflames passions. Hallström skilfully creates a sense of the stifling nature of provin...

Dealing with intolerance, Chocolat opens with the upstanding Reynaud (Molina) welcoming the faithful to church in the small French town where he is mayor. It's a bit slow moving, the second half is better. I thought it was a pretty mediocre movie, but there was a line the priest said that really did it for me:
"I don't want to talk about His divinity. I'd rather talk about His humanity. I mean, you know, how He lived His life here on earth. His kindness, His tolerance..Listen, here's what I think. I think we can't go 'round measuring our goodness by what we don't do, what we deny ourselves, what we resist, and who we exclude. I think we've got to measure goodness by what we embrace, what we create, and who we include."
After watching the movie, when he speaks those words it feels so powerful..
For a movie on such a petite scale without grandeur sets or large budget this was exceptionally well crafted. All the acting was superb with great meaning of open mindedness, kindness, and harmony among people. This movie deals with prejudices, unrighteousness, love, autonomy, ambitions, and wistfulness, stringency of custom, and the freedom of vivacity that lives in people no matter how suppressed it may be. The narrative component was almost soothing to listen too. Judi Dench is a gem and always will be one of the great thespians, man what a rebel character. Juliette Binoche would be my ideal wife. The Chocolaterie gives you mad cravings if you’re a chocolate enthusiast. Can’t believe I waited 8 yrs to see this movie I didn’t think it was for a guy.
5/5 stars because it makes you wanting more while you eat your truffles. I know I did. Yum!
This movie was both delicious and wonderfully romantic.
I was really bummed out that I didn't have any chocolate around while I watched it online or on TV when it showed on HBO.. :( But hey, at least I got the chance to see Johnny Depp with a ponytail and without any freaky makeup! God, he was adorable - Roux..
