Charlie Wilson, an alcoholic womanizer and Texas congressman, persuaded the CIA to train and arm resistance fighters in Afghanistan to fend off the Soviet Union. With the help of rogue CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos, the two men supplied money, training and a team of military experts that turned the ill-equipped Afghan freedom-fighters into a force that brought the Red Army to a stalemate. However, the result also empowered the Taliban and terrorists including Osama bin Laden.
CharlieWilson's War is an anachronism, the wrong movie at the wrong time. Not only does it tell its tale in a style that feels dated and artificial, the story itself focuses on events that history has overtaken. The moving finger has written and moved on, and not even the combined star power of Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, writer Aaron Sorkin and director Mike Nichols can do anything about it.
Based on the bestselling book by George Crile, Charlie Wilson's War does tell a most unusual 1980s true story. It relates how Wilson, a pleasure-loving congressman from Texas (Hanks), joined forces with a wealthy and reactionary socialite (Roberts) and a grumpy CI...
Charlie Wilson's War In this historical comedy, three unlikely partners-in-politics bring about the end of the Soviet Union - with repercussions that will ultimately damage their own country. Mike Nichols directs, from a screenplay by Aaron ('The West Wing') Sorkin
Larger-than-life characters, memorably funny lines, and a story totally unbelievable and yet almost entirely true - that is Charlie Wilson's War, Mike Nichols' dramatisation of the three unlikely figures who together helped spearhead a massive (but covert) US operation in 1980s Afghanistan, leading to the ignominious withdrawal of Russian troops, and then to the collapse of the Soviet Union... and eventually to ...
A disaster.
It is quite difficult to say what this film hopes to achieve. Is it to entertain? To inform? To criticise American policy, or endorse it? It is not hard to maintain, however, that whatever the aims were in the thoughts of director Mike Nichols, Charlie Wilson's War is a resounding failure.
The film - like Nichols' previous feature, Closer - lacks any meaningful character development. Before the release of the film, Tom Hanks told his prospective audience not to see his character as a morally upright man. No, he said, Wilson is supposed to an ignorant womaniser and drug abuser: a man (as he is told by the President of Pakistan) with 'substantial character flaws'. ...

When we first meet Charlie Wilson (Hanks), a Texan Democrat Congressman with a long line of credit in political favours and a love of booze and women, he is in Las Vegas, sharing a hot tub (and cocaine) with a shonky produ...

i dont think u should beleive what the american movies tell about history , most of it is changed or faked so to turn it to a good show so the movie will be sold , but it is a good movie
Good movie, only saw it full because my favorite actor Tom Hanks was in it. A movie with distorted facts but anyway enjoyable. Julia Roberts at this age looks a really beauty.
saw this movie some time ago down loaded it on my laptop then ended up in iran and pakistan its a good movie showed it to some people there but it just shows you how quick it is to forget the americans helped the afghans to fight the russians and even built them school now they use the same weapons to fight the americans ( you can lead a horse to water but you can make it drink)
I really loved this movie. Makes you think about so many things!
I was born in Soviet Union and I know how unfair and careless the communist government was even towards their own people - most of the combatants came back from Afganistan with serious mental traumas (not to mention physical). The war is never good for either sides and I am glad people like Charlie Wilson are born to try and do something about it!
Tom Hanks always has an eye for a good script and this was no exception. I loved this film from start to finish. Its a film thats not afraid to ask awkward questions and leaves you thinking long after it has finished. Loved how it incorporated alot of comic aspects aswell as the drama. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tom Hanks worked really well together and gave alot of realism to the relationship between the two main characters. The plot wasnt too over complicated which can sometimes happen in political dramas and i found the whole film enjoyable. This is definitely another Hanks classic. 5/5
If this is REALLY how business gets done -and it would not surprise me one iota, then kudos to the film maker. Eye-opening and entertaining, since "based upon actual events" - I feel this is even a better form of media - a docu-drama almost. Worth the watch!! 4/5
