My daddy was a bank robber...
No good guys, no hero, no improving message, just Don Siegel following up Dirty Harry with another cracking, noirish action film. Things go downhill pretty quickly for Matthau and his gang, and, given the genre and the tone, there's no real comfort zone for the viewer that things necessarily have to turn out well for the protagonists. Joe Don Baker is great, unsettling and physically intimidating, dominating every scene he's in. Fine lead performance from Matthau, playing against type as a smart, ruthless survivor.
