"Chandni Bar" is a fine film that deserves every award you could throw at it. The film charts the descent of a woman, Mumtaz, into work as a beer bar dancer, following being raped by her uncle(a scene which is treated evocatively but sensitively). I suppose some cynical Westerners, given the prevalence in the West of peeler bars, live sex shows, and porno palaces, might regard this film in a rather quaint light. That would be wrong, however. The 'game' is the same everywhere, basically. And it's all here, believe me...angling and playing guys to get them to part with their money, the prostitution on the side, pimps, johns, everyone on the make, women being picked apart piece by piece by the male gaze as though one were a slab of meat, regarding the marks who fall in love with them with contempt, the underworld hypocrisy about calling a spade a spade(as it were), the use of multiple working names, lying there coldly while some fool mounts one, how really really hard it is to leave the sexual underworld once you're in it, the legal and societal contempt for women in 'dubious' lines of work, the sense of everything closing in and options disappearing as one gets older, the pressure to prostitute for rich men, and the final horror of seeing the 'curse' spread to the next generation. The final shot of Mumtaz with an expression of total and complete defeat is heartbreaking and classic. The cinematography here is fluid and alert. It's great how everything in the beer bar is tinged a sickly green, making everyone appear as though they were about to throw up. It certainly underlines the feeling running through the film. The portrayal of the 'justice' system in India is cynical, but cynicism is usually justified about nearly all legal systems. Apart from an extended torture scene, the violence in the movie is treated with crafty understatement, all the more effective for it not being overused. All in all, I'd give it a 9 out of 10 and might even go further. As cri
