A foundling lad, Patrick "Kitten" Braden, comes of age in the 1970s. He leaves his Irish town, in part to look for his mother and in part because his transgender nature is beyond the town's understanding. He's taken in by a rock band, falls for the lead singer, has brushes with the IRA, is arrested by the London police, works in a peep show, and poses as a survey researcher for the phone company. Throughout, his nationality and his nature put him at great risk. In his search for his mother, he makes surprising discoveries of friendship and family. But, will he survive?
Wonderful, complex entertainment
Set in the 60's and 70's against the backdrop of the troubles in Ireland, Breakfast on Pluto follows the upbringing and early adult life of the unique illegitimate transvestite Patrick (Kitten) Brady, brilliantly acted by Cillian Murphy in a role which should win him awards aplenty. The chaotic colourful story shows the difficulties he has to face, but never seems to over-sentimentalise them, neither does the film fall into cliché, even when you expect it might. Instead, presumably because the story is told through the complex, compassionate Kitty, the film has real voice and character. It is a little chaotic and difficult to follow at times because of the strong Irish accent...
Patrick "Kitten" Braden, the husky-voiced, heavy-lidded transvestite played by Cillian Murphy in Neil Jordan's Breakfast on Pluto, wishes that everybody would stop being so serious. Which is pretty wishful as wishes go, considering Patrick/Kitten grows up gay in repressive 1960s Ireland and struggles mightily to remain glib and shallow throughout the turbulent '70s, as bombs, riots and violent clashes make the world unsafe for fabulousness.
Based on a novel by Patrick McCabe (whose novel The Butcher Boy Jordan adapted in 1997), Breakfast on Pluto presents itself as a sort of 20th century Candide, synoptic chapter headings and all. But more than the easily...
Breakfast on Pluto The tale of a young transvestite in 1960s and 1970s Ireland and London. Cillian Murphy stars, Neil Jordan directs and his Butcher Boy co-writer Patrick McCabe collaborates
The title is a quote from Mosher (Cunningham), a philosophical stoner biker who young Patrick "Kitten" Braden meets; it is the end of a journey of self-discovery. Such a journey forms the backbone of the film.
Patrick is the illegitimate son of Father Liam (Neeson) and his housekeeper (Birthistle). He was packed off to live with a foster mother and grows up an outsider in straight-laced, small-town 1960s Ireland. He becomes friends with three other outsiders: adopted Charlie, Laurence (who h...

Hmm, not how I usually like to see Cilliam Murphy but he did manage to play a trany with style. Quite the cast and an interesting view of 70's Ireland.
I adored this movie. Kitten is a very lovable character (although some people just don't like cats on principle ;). I liked that everyone was pretty much a good guy in this film and the antagonist was the total chaos and disillusionment around them. I wouldn't call this a feel-good movie but I felt pretty good by the end of it.
