The Borrowers are four-inch high "little people" who live under the floorboards. When the owner of the house they live in dies and evil realtor Ocious Potter wants to destroy the house to build luxury apartments on its place, they start to fight him with the help of the son of house owner, Pete.
Based on Mary Norton's much loved children's books, The Borrowers tells of a tiny family living contentedly under the floorboards of a 'Lender' family, until an evil real-estate developer claims ownership of the house and attempts to knock it down and build an apartment building. Not particularly offensive, but the film is rather charmless, and driven by special effects. British television had twice used this material before with memorable results, and this version seems rather crass and unnecessary in comparison. And what is this 'borrowing' euphemism about? They are thieves and leeches, stamp them out!

Jim Broadbent is on good form as the father of the tiny Clock family who live beneath the floorboards of an old house, while John Goodman delivers a large slice of ham as the unscrupulous full-sized lawyer who intends to demolish their home. Peter Hewitt (Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey) directs this fun children's adventure, which features a host of British comedy talent (including Hugh Laurie and Celia Imrie) alongside Broadbent.
