Blow Dry
The glitz and glamour of the British hairdressing championships form the backdrop to this bittersweet comedy, based on a screenplay by The Full Monty's Simon Beaufoy, and directed by Paddy Breathnach (I Went Down). It's set in a sleepy Yorkshire town, where ex-champion barber Alan Rickman faces stiff competition from favourite Bill Nighy. Sadly, it's a bit of a mess — a subplot involving Natasha Richardson as Rickman's cancer-afflicted estranged wife and Rachel Griffiths as her lover sits uneasily alongside some farcical stylist skulduggery and caricature competitors. Rising US star Josh Hartnett also looks horribly out of place as a wannabe northerner. There are some genuinely affecting moments, but the laughs are spread too thinly.
