A former rock star, Johnny Boz, is brutally killed during sex, and the case is assigned to detective Nick Curran of the SFPD. During the investigation, Nick meets Catherine Tramell, a crime novelist who was Boz's girlfriend when he died. Catherine proves to be a very clever and manipulative woman, and though Nick is more or less convinced that she murdered Boz, he is unable to find any evidence. Later, when Nilsen, Nick's rival in the police, is killed, Nick suspects of Catherine's involvement in it. He then starts to play a dangerous lust-filled mind game with Catherine to nail her, but as t... heir relationship progresses, the body count rises and contradicting evidences force Nick to start questioning his own suspicions about Catherine's guilt.

Basic Instinct Paul Verhoeven's unashamedly upfront thriller introduced the world to Sharon Stone, playing ice-maiden murder suspect and author Catherine Tramell, who is being investigated (in more ways than one) by Michael Douglas Basic Instinct wastes no time in establishing its shock tactics. Opening on a shot of a man and a blonde woman making love, it soon descends into a bloodbath as the woman hacks her bound-up lover to pieces with an ice pick. The unfortunate victim is rock star Johnny Boz (Cable), ex-boyfriend of Catherine Tramell (Stone), who just happens to have written a novel in which a duplicate murder occurs, down to the last detail.

Some more BI trivia: The car that Catherine Tramell drives in the film is a Spyker C8 Laviolette. It is a real car produced by a Dutch company. It has a 400 hp aluminum V-8 engine sourced from Audi.
Robert Downey Jr. was set to star but had to drop out when he was charged with drug possession. Kurt Russell was attached at some point but bailed out because he felt uncomfortable with the nudity. Pierce Brosnan refused to play the male lead role because of distasteful elements. Bruce Greenwood was set to star but dropped out because he hadn't been signed on yet and feared the actors strike. Benjamin Bratt was banned by Sharon Stone for not being a good actor.
I really liked this movie, it was my first time ever watching it and i wasn't disappointed. I loved that the movie kept me interested unlike alot of films today. also unlike alot of new movies, i could not predict the ending, which is always a plus for me.
This movie is awesome, or may i say this is the ****** movie of the century. Great thiller and Sharon Stone with her performance has made this movie an classic. Michael douglas did fine too, and bravo to the writer great story which makes you glue to the movie from the start to the end. 10/10
This movie is still a classic even now, it's probablly one of the most well known thrillers of all time. I still love it now 10 years on (and Sharron Stone is smoking hot lol!).
Terrific movie, full of drama, action suspense and explicit sex. Sharon Stone looks pretty hot in this picture and blends in very well with Michael Douglas. I loved everything and enjoyed every second of the movie.
I understand there's a sequel to this picture, but I'm not sure. I'll bet the sequel is not as good as the original. It never is. If you're over 18, go and see this picture; better yet, buy it.
