Back to the Future Part II
Marty McFly returns in Robert Zemeckis's first follow-up to his smash-hit time travel saga
This is the weakest part of the Back To The Future trilogy, largely because the plot often feels patchy and contrived in between the effects department's futuristic field day. Nevertheless, it's decent enough escapist nonsense. The amiable Fox returns as Marty McFly, once again lousing up the whole future when a trip to the year 2015 turns bully Biff Tannen (Wilson) into the world's wealthiest man. So begins a madcap trip that not only takes our hero backwards and forwards through time but also leads him back 'into' the first movie. Effectively bridging the gap between the infinitely superior Parts I and III, Back To The Future Part II manages to repeat some of the finer moments of the first film (a 21st-century version of the skateboard chase, for example) with ease. However, some appalling make-up effects and a failure to empathise with the crowd-pleasing original make this a movie that's as unsatisfying as it is undeniably smart. Verdict An ambitious film that fails to recreate the warmth or excitment of the first Back To The Future. Fortunately, a rousing final chapter was just around the corner. |
