Babe
Sublimely endearing Australian yarn about a piglet raised by a dog who learns to herd sheep. Won a slew of awards and charmed innumerable children
People may have laughed off the notion of a talking pig movie winning multiple Oscar nominations, but director Noonan's triumphant debut is no ordinary kiddie film. In this adaptation (by George Miller, director of the Mad Max films no less) of Dick King-Smith's tale of the sheep-pig, Noonan created one of the most appealing family films of the 90s. It's a children's movie that transcends age and turned Cromwell, as the silent but kindly Farmer Hoggett, into one of the most dependable character actors around. The real stars though are the animals, such as Babe herself (voiced by 'Rugrats' regular Cavanaugh) and the sheep dog she calls mum, Fly (voiced by Margolyes). They display such character and emotion (the scene in which a sheepdog's pups leave her is heartbreaking) that it's enough to turn you vegetarian. |
