In the 50's, the psychiatrist Max Raphael is hired to work as superintendent of an asylum in the outskirts of London, and he moves with his wife Stella Raphael and their son Charlie. Stella has a passionless marriage and is ignored by Max; her boredom changes when her son befriends the handsome inmate Edgar Stark, an sculptor that in a crisis of jealousy had killed and disfigured his wife, and that is treated by Dr. Peter Cleave, an ambitious psychiatrist that aspired Max's position. During the afternoons, Stella has a hot adulterous affair with Edgar until the day he escapes and their affair... is discovered. Stella has to take a decision between her family and her wild passion for Edgar.

Ticks all the boxes
This film basically ticks all the boxes for its dark thriller genre.
• Woman trapped in loveless marriage – check
• Falls for the wrong guy – check
• Finds out he’s the wrong guy too late – check
• Asylum inmate turns out to be, well, nutter – check
Perhaps a reassuring film for those who like this kind of conventional format, but not for me, I’m afraid. Gets 2 stars for good acting from Richardson and McKellen.
back from the cinema...
Just comming back from the cinema I find myself wanting to spread the word about this film, its really, really good, no doubt about it.
I never go into a film knowing the plot or expect a director to either break a style or conform to it, I always theerfore get a surprise, and with this film I got that, plus a few jumps.
The whole thing looked really good, the actors were chosen well and the story was plausable. Despite those looking for a review with some kind of deep psychological meaning I just say its a good one and you'd be a mega-fool to miss it.
