L.A. in the early 1930's: racism, poverty, and disease color the Bunker Hill neighborhood where Arturo Bandini, a lover of men and beasts alike, has arrived from Colorado to write the great Los Angeles novel. After six months and down to his last nickel, he orders a cup of coffee, served by Camilla Lopez, beautiful, self-possessed, and Mexican. Based on a thirties novel,one of the great undiscovered? the fim looks really good - first rate cinematography perfectly capturing the time, place and mood. The film, however, could never be described as great. It lacks real substance and is very slow. Nothing happens, and after about an hour, I thought I might turn to dust myself. There have been plenty of good movies about struggling writers -Adaptation, for instance, with Nicholas Cage. But there is only so much energy and action one can generate around a guy sitting at a typewriter tearing out his hair in frustration and screwing up endless sheets of paper.
