Arise My LoveLargely scripted by the men behind Sunset Boulevard, the plot for this ceaselessly original romantic comedy was constructed, so its director claimed, day to day from the papers' headlines. Milland is an American awaiting execution for fighting against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War. He is freed when Colbert comes forward claiming to be his wife, but in reality she is an ambitious reporter less interested in Milland than getting a story, or possibly creating one. Nevertheless, romance blossoms while Hitler's army is marching through Europe, but they go their separate ways when she has to cover the war and he has to fight it.
