Antz

Animated features about insects came of age in 1998 when Disney offered up A Bug's Life and the newly formed Dreamworks company produced this starry vehicle. Allen provides the voice for Z, a worker ant in therapy because he wants to be an individual in a society where everyone conforms. Z falls for a disguised ant princess, but falls foul of a villainous general (Hackman) when he impersonates a soldier ant (Stallone). The artwork is spectacular, vocal performances uniformly capable and the jokes appealing to both adults and children. Good piece of cartoonery.

A little too clever for its own good?
I admit the first time I saw this I didn't like it as much as a Bug's Life; it is a darker, more subtle film. I think for children there is less appeal - not enough bright colours or child-orientated humour. This is a cartoon pitched squarely at a more mature audience who will appreciate the references - Zee the neurotic ant on the psychiatrist's couch, for example. The somewhat formulaic 'small-ant saves the day, gets the girl and strikes a blow for individualism' plot struggles to hold the attention, though, and the animation is a little flat.
