Angel on My Shoulder
One of those whimsical fantasies beloved of Hollywood in the 1940s, this time with Paul Muni as a murdered gangster sent back to Earth to seek revenge in a deal with ultra-urbane Devil Claude Rains. The uncharacteristically cast Muni enjoys himself in the brash leading role, and Anne Baxter is simply delightful as the confused fiancée of the crusading judge whom Rains is trying to discredit. Veteran director Archie Mayo keeps the action moving along and makes good use of the story by Harry Segall, who had won an Oscar five years earlier for the fantasy Here Comes Mr Jordan, which also featured Rains — as an angel.
