Punjabi-speaking Shalini Singh Gujral lives a middle-classed lifestyle in the Himalayan region in India along with her mom, Kirat; dad, Jaspal; brother, Happy; and sister, Littly, and was engaged to Neil Brar as a child. Years later Neil re-locates to the United States of America, and there is no contact between him and the Gujral family but Shalini hopes to marry and live with him eventually. When pressure is applied on her due to Littly's future marriage, she travels to California, where Neil is reportedly employed with Cantect, an agency that recruits aspiring Hollywood artistes. To her sh... ock she finds him in the arms of a blonde named Nicole, and he refuses to have to do anything with her, leave alone marry her. She is then befriended by Robert Shorwell, a Caucasian male and co-worker of Neil, who offers to Americanize her so that she can win back Neil, to which she agrees but writes to her family in India that all is well with her and Neil. Robert, and his friend, Blaine, successfully transform Shailini to an a much more acceptable female of Hispanic origin, re-name her Shelley Picante, and prepare her to woo and win back Neil. A Punjabi Pygmalion, director Lorraine Senna's Americanizing Shelley is a sweet-natured, often charming twist on the assimilation comedy, the Ugly Ducking story, even Cyrano de Bergerac -- even if it's recycled/tortured into narrative existence. Although she makes fun of Bollywood conventions, screenwriter and star Namrata Singh Gujral will probably find her most appreciative aud among young Indian moviegoers who want something outside the arthouse.
Some might take exception to the Americanizing of the title, a process which apparently means making a nice, shy, sari-wearing, pigtailed Sikh girl in Chicken Little glasses comfortable dressing like a hooker. B...

The story was good and cute. But ppl should know what all Indian don't idle all day long reading love notes from the past. And they're accents are not that horrible either. And also, they're ignorant and dumb ppl. But other than that, the movie was okay.
That was a real cute movie.. I love the whole Bollywood style in general and I love the way this was a soft romantic comedy with classic undertones; Boy meets girl, falls in love and happy ending. Two thumbs up =O)
Ronreaco Lee ("Blaine") is my favorite here: he has an enjoyable sense of humor. This movie has some nice moments and some funny ones, though not enough. It gets off to a slow start - I was going to tune out after 10 minutes. But it improves after that, though it remains far from excellent. BTW, several minutes before the end, the plot seems as if 10 or 15 minutes were skipped over or edited out.
I rate "Americanizing Shelley" 5 1/2, or maybe 6, out of 10.
my darling todou is so faithful! never fails me!! lol..
movie was a good time pass..but whats with that accent?? godd..anyways, i cant say its the best romance i ever saw..coz i didnt feel connected..i thought the whole movie was a fake!..
