In Manhattan, the British limousine driver Alfie is surrounded by beautiful women, most of them clients, and he lives as a Don Juan, having one night stands with all of them and without any sort of commitment. His girl-friend and single-mother Julie is quite upset with the situation and his best friends are his colleague Marlon and his girl-friend Lonette. Alfie has a brief affair with Lonette, and the consequences of his act forces Alfie to reflect and wonder about his life style.
What's It All About, Alfie?
Gurning, grinning Jude Law phones in his performance as Alfie for the GQ Generation in this limp remake of the Michael Caine classic.
Granted, Alfie 2004 was never going to match the original, but its premise and the potential for an altogether different type of film was certainly there. However, on whatever levels it might try to work, Alfie almost always fails. From his whiny, tearful breakdowns to the desperation and clutching at straws of his relationship with Marissa Tomei, the Alfie of the new millenium comes off as soft, and altogether boring.
Jude Law is a fine actor, but his performance here is risable; self-congratulatory and smug.
I loved the first Alfie, everything about it epitomized the period in which it was filmed, cockney wideboys, birds, cars, humor and settings. And then there was the perfect actor at its centre, Michael Caine, his role as Alfie catapulted him into the big time, and today we have a remake with the next generation Caine, Jude Law.
It is very fitting that Jude decided to step into Alfie's shoes after all of these years, it is a huge roll to step into and remake, and do you know what? I think they pulled it off, the film has the Hollywood gloss that the original never had, but that was part of its charm, a brit film with a brit actor with brit humour.
