African Queen, TheThe fact that Huston's classic Bogart and Hepburn adventure was not nominated for a Best Picture Oscar (won that year by An American in Paris) remains one of the greatest award-giving snubs of all time, especially given the film's superiority to any of the others nominated that year. As steamboat man Charlie Allnut, Bogart once again reminds us of his legendary status - this ranks alongside Casablanca and The Big Sleep as one of his most memorable screen turns - while a screen chemistry rarely seen before or since is created by a captivating Hepburn as Rose, the woman he rescues from the clutches of German troops while on a mission to East Africa during the First World War. You have to wonder how it might have turned out had first choices John Mills and Bette Davis signed on.
