84 Charing Cross RoadA transatlantic love story, about two people who never manage to meet, communicating through the written word ... surely ripe material to be remade while the World Wide Web still seems exciting? The story opens in post-war New York with bibliophile Bancroft seeing an ad for a mail order shop in London. She begins a correspondence with bookseller Hopkins that will last for decades. Their letters to each other form the spine of the narrative, effectively conveying the affection that develops between them, while tender performances from the two leads help. Surprisingly enthralling.
