The rancher Daniel Evans, who lost part of his leg in the Civil War, is broken and owing a large amount to a powerful man in Bisbee. When the outlaw Ben Wade is captured after the heist of a stagecoach, Dan offers to escort the cold blood killer to the city of Contention to take the 3:10 PM train to Yuma to be sent to trial. In return, he would receive US$ 200,00, enough to save his land and give a better life to his family. During their journey, Ben gets closer to Dan while his gang of criminals follows the group to rescue their boss.
If 3:10 to Yuma feels familiar, and it does, it's not just because it's a remake of the classic 1957 western. Almost every plot point -- psycho gunslingers, savage Apaches, even doctors who say "that bullet has to come out" -- is a trope that has been a genre standard for decades.
But what's most impressive about this new version, starring Russell Crowe as a charismatic outlaw and Christian Bale as the downtrodden rancher who crosses his path, is that James Mangold directs it with such energy and passion that it's as if he didn't know it's all been done before.

3:10 To Yuma
Few things make me more concerned for the future of cinema than the all-pervasive trend for remakes currently sweeping Hollywood. Okay so theres the odd good one but for every Dawn of the Dead theres a Black Christmas, and a Hitcher, a Fog and you get the point. So we arrive at the question of what the hell Im doing at the screening of a remake, of a Western (a genre Ive no time for) or indeed at a film starring Russell Crowe (who, LA Confidential aside, Ive never liked in a movie, ever). I cant really give you an answer other than It was what was on but Im glad I did sit down for this one, as it was one of the biggest and best surp...
The Western is back..with a bang (well several actually).
Not since Clint and Eli Wallach wore chaps has there been a better cowie film, I'm saddle sore just from the seat edge action watching this. In any case, regardless of it being a western, this is a really good story, an excellent chase, and a superb shoot em up. To be honest my partner doesn't like westerns, but thought this was a really great film, it is definately worth a watch. In addition Christian Bale and Russel Crowe are on top of their game, and must definately be a couple of the best screen actors around right now. l would saddle up and ride to dodge if you have to, to catch this one.
