Based on the short Stephen King horror story of the same name, 1408 is about supernatural writer Mike Enslin, an author of two successful books on supernatural phenomena. As research for his latest book, Enslin is determined to check out the notorious room 1408 in a New York City hotel by personally staying as a guest in the fabled room. He believes that 1408 is just a myth perpetuated by stories and rumors that Enslin has collected for his past works. However, hotel manager Mr. Olin has strong objections to Enslin's stay and only warns him of possible danger to come. Enslin is determined to ... go anyway. But what Mike Enslin is about to experience is no myth, as 1408 truly is a room where the guests don't check out by noon.

One can only imagine, with horror, what would happen if a guest asked for more towels at the Hotel Dolphin, the locale of the freakily scary 1408, yet another film that puts "hostile" back in hostelry. While it's certainly been the season for hotel/motel movies -- see Bug, Vacancy and Sympathy -- helmer Mikael (Derailed) Hafstrom's take on single-room occupancy is the most cinematically ambitious. For star John Cusack, it's a perfect fit and, with a little massaging from the Weinstein Co., should emerge as one of the surprise hits of the summer.

1408 After receiving a mysterious postcard, horror writer and closet cynic Mike Enslin resolves to spend a night in The Dolphin Hotel's dread room, 1408. John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson star in this Stephen King adaptation
No stranger to recycling his own material, there's a touch of the familiar about master of terror Stephen King's '1408', first published as a short story in his macabre collection 'Everything's Eventual'. Unhappy families, spooky suites, a writer with a case of the crazies; it's like a brochure detailing the delights of The Shining's Overlook Hotel, itself masterfully brought to life by Stanley Kubrick.

Terror, for Stephen King, must be wondering what will happen to his stories once they make it to the big screen; he once vowed never to direct again for fear it would come out looking like Maximum Overdrive.
But he has no need to worry this time around in 1408, a faithful and creepy adaptation of his 2002 short story.
At his best, King's most effective creatures are not the ones behind creaking doors, but inside crooked minds. And director Mikael H??fstr??m (Derailed) takes the principle to heart in this story about Mike Enslin, a hack author (John Cusack) who doesn't believe in ghosts but makes a healthy living rating haunted hotels.
