Date of Birth: 22 March 1933 Won Broadway's 2001 Tony Award as Best Actor (Play) for "The Invention of Love."His close theatre association with 'Kenneth Branagh' (qv) led to work in a couple of the actor's biggest films: _Henry V (1989)_ (qv) and _Dead Again (1991)_ (qv).Found a decade's worth of classical work at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre where he enjoyed character star roles: Estragon in "Waiting for Godot," Prospero in "The Tempest", Antonio in "The Merchant of Venice" and the title role in "Uncle Vanya".Underwent a ... procedure to correct a heart arrhythmia in 2006, briefly delaying the opening of 'Tom Stoppard' (qv)'s "The Coast of Utopia," in which he plays a major role.His bravura work at the Royal Shakespeare Compony during the 1984-1986 seasons included "Henry V" with 'Kenneth Branagh' (qv), "The Merchant of Venice", with 'Roger Rees' (qv) in "Hamlet", "Love's Labour's Lost," "The Winter's Tale," "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and with 'Jeremy Irons' (qv) in "Richard II".Acted with a children's theatre group before moving, at the age of seventeen, to Ottawa to work in weekly rep.Joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company at the Palace in 1955 and worked alongside 'John Gielgud' (qv) in "Much Ado About Nothing" and as Edgar opposite Gielgud's "King Lear".Became a character star on Broadway when he won the Tony Award for "The Invention of Love" (2000).
