Name: Jean Yarbrough
Date of Birth: Attended college at the University of the South. Yarbrough's career had a lot in common with his slightly older contemporary, William Beaudine: both began in silents, beginning in menial positions. Beaudine however was at least once considered a promising talent but ultimately both became unabashed hacks, directing much of the worst drek to ever ooze out of poverty row. But it was their ability to bring assignments in on time and under budget by ignoring flubbed lines, historical anachronism... s, and various continuity issues that would endear them to their employers. Both directors were strong proponents of "editing in the camera," with Yarbrough pulling his directorial apprenticeship at RKO's short subject division in 1936. He directed his first feature, Rebellious Daughters (1938) for a fly-by-night poverty row company, an ominous sign of things to come. By 1940 he had taken up residence along Gower Gulch, first for PRC, then largely for Monogram (later known as Allied Artists). Yarbrough's career took an unexpected upswing when he hooked up with Abbott & Costello in 1944. He would work with the boys in several of their lesser (but still extremely popular) features and would eventually direct 10 episodes of their TV show. He liked the rapid pace of TV production and his skills as a quickie director would later prove invaluable; along with Beaudine, he soon became one of the most in-demand directors working in Hollywood. Both men would remain active well into their old age, occasionally dabbling in low-budget features, well into their old age. Read more Jean Yarbrough movies (director)
