Born and raised in Austria. After attending the Austrian Academy of Cinematography, he did a postgraduate at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany from 1997 to 2001. Parts of Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (2004) were filmed on his family's estate in the Austrian mountains. Related to Wendelin Weingartner, the Austrian state of Tyrol's governor from 1993 to 2002.
