He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1996 (1995 season) for Best Actor for his performance in Peer Gynt at the Royal Shakespeare Company Young Vic Theatre. He was awarded the 2003 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actor in a Musical of 2002 for his performance in My Fair Lady at the Drury Lane Theatre in London. ... He was awarded the 2001 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor for his performances in The Winter's Tale and The Relapse at the Royal National Theatre. Has two children, Ralph (born 1990) and Georgia (born 1992), with his partner Lesley. Studied English and Theatre Studies at Warwick University (1975-8) before training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. In 1999 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Warwick.
